National Mentoring Month: The Power of Connection
January is here, and with it comes National Mentoring Month—a time to celebrate the life-changing power of mentorship and highlight the incredible need for mentors in our communities. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Idaho, we’re thrilled to dedicate this month to showcasing the transformative impact of mentorship while encouraging more people to join us in building brighter futures for Idaho’s youth.
The Importance of Mentoring
Mentorship is more than just guidance—it’s about building meaningful, supportive relationships that empower young people to reach their fullest potential. For a child facing adversity, having a mentor—a “Big”—can mean the difference between struggling to stay on course and thriving with confidence. Research shows that mentored youth are:
- 55% more likely to enroll in college,
- 78% more likely to volunteer regularly, and
- 46% less likely to use illegal drugs.
The simple act of showing up for a child, being a consistent presence in their life, and cheering them on as they chase their dreams has the power to change their trajectory. Mentoring doesn’t just benefit the child—it transforms mentors too, fostering connections and strengthening communities.
The Impact We See Every Day
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Idaho, we witness firsthand the ripple effects of mentorship. From helping a Little Brother overcome mental health struggles to guiding a Little Sister through the challenges of school, our mentors are making a profound difference every day.
Be Part of the Movement
This National Mentoring Month, we invite you to take action:
- Become a mentor: Share your time and experiences with a child who needs you. Learn more about becoming a Big here.
- Donate: Support our programs and help us reach more kids in need by become a recurring donor, aka a Match Maker.
Together, we can ensure that every child in Idaho has someone in their corner.
Special Events to Celebrate Mentorship
We’re excited to announce two amazing ways to celebrate National Mentoring Month with us this year:
