Answering Your Questions About BBBS
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Idaho, we are committed to creating bright futures for youth through mentoring relationships. If you’ve been considering getting involved, whether as a mentor, parent, or donor, you probably have some questions. Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about our program.
What is Big Brothers Big Sisters? Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) is a mentoring organization that pairs adult volunteers (Bigs) with youth (Littles) in a one-to-one Match. Through meaningful, professionally supported relationships, we help youth reach their full potential.
Who are the Littles in the program? Littles are youth between the ages of 6 and 18 who benefit from mentorship. We enroll ages 6-13, but they can stay in our program until they graduate high school. Many Littles come from single-parent households, live in low-income communities, or face other challenges that make having a supportive adult in their life especially important. However, we have Littles from all different backgrounds, because every youth can benefit from having another caring adult in their corner.
What do Bigs and Littles do together? Bigs and Littles spend quality time together doing activities they both enjoy. This could be going for a walk, playing a sport, working on a craft, visiting a museum, or simply grabbing a bite to eat. The goal is to develop a meaningful relationship that supports the child’s confidence and growth.
How much time is required to be a Big? We ask for a commitment of a few hours per month, typically spending time together 2-3 times per month for at least a year. This consistency helps build trust and allows the relationship to develop.
How are matches made? We carefully match Bigs and Littles based on interests, personalities, and location to ensure compatibility. Our team provides training and ongoing support to help create successful matches.
Is it safe? Yes! Child safety is our top priority. All Bigs go through a thorough screening process, including background checks and interviews. We also provide professional match support to ensure the relationship is safe and positive for both the Big and the Little.
